A study conducted in New Zealand found a close relationship between booster rollout and rising excess mortality. The study was published in EconPapers, the world’s largest collection of online Economics working papers, journal articles and software.

The researchers deduced that age groups most likely to have had booster injections had up to 10 percent more excess mortality than the age groups most likely not to have taken up a booster dose. The said paper was authored by John Gibson, a professor at the University of Waikato‘s Department of Economics.

In the study titled “The Rollout of COVID-19 Booster Vaccines is Associated with Rising Excess Mortality in New Zealand,” Gibson stated: “The results suggest 16 (95 percent confidence interval: 5 to 27) excess deaths per 100,000 booster doses, amounting to over 400 excess deaths in New Zealand given the booster doses administered to date. If this rate of excess deaths is extrapolated to other countries, it amounts to over 300,000 excess deaths worldwide.”

The study also noted that the rise in excess mortality rates was not experienced by those in the 0-29 age group, who are mostly ineligible for boosters.

The primary vaccine used in New Zealand is Pfizer. With 8.2 million original vaccines and 2.2 million booster doses administered, about half of the population are both fully vaccinated and boosted.

“Value of statistical life of these excess deaths is over $1.6 billion. Even a small fraction of this (say, one percent) would have been sufficient to fund robust evidence on the impacts of rolling out COVID-19 booster vaccines,” Gibson added.

The paper also mentioned that if unnecessary boosting causes significant adverse reactions, it may increase vaccine hesitancy generally. Also, a concern raised elsewhere is that the potentially low benefits of COVID-19 vaccines relative to the costs borne by vaccines may undermine public confidence in other vaccination efforts.

Gibson and his team pointed out that even the World Health Organization has admitted that a vaccination strategy based on repeated booster doses of the original vaccine composition is unlikely to be appropriate or sustainable.

Back in September last year, an advisory panel of experts not affiliated with the Food and Drug Administration, voted against the mass vaccination of booster shots due to a lack of safety data and doubts about the benefits of mass boosting over targeted approaches, Gibson further noted.

Nevertheless, FDA ignored the advice and proceeded to approve the boosters for the general population.

New Zealand is stuck and not moving on from the “pandemic”

More than two years have passed since the pandemic started, and a lot of countries have eased out of the lockdown protocols and COVID-19 safety guidelines. However, New Zealand is still stuck at “the orange traffic light setting.”

Half of the entire country’s population has been fully and triple jabbed, but the omicron surge is becoming more intense, with cases continuously soaring and hospitals recording an all-time high patient numbers for April. (Related: After residents were forced to get “vaccinated,” New Zealand saw massive surge in new “positive cases” of covid.)

According to the New Zealand government, large gatherings can still take place; masks are optional in most settings; and schools and workplaces can open without restrictions.

Hospitals are already operating at 100 percent capacity. However, the Association of General Surgeons wrote to Health Minister Andrew Little to report how a staffing shortfall is “profoundly reducing” the doctors’ ability to deliver care.

If hospitals cancel procedures and close wards, this could manage the staffing shortage. However, hospital executives would have to redirect COVID care staff and resources to urgent care clinics. But the clinics are already reporting impossible numbers. A Hamilton clinic was documented to have doubled the number of patients compared with the same time last year.

Analysts are saying that this “orange setting” is backed by very few rules and little government encouragement. There could be no sign of moving on.

Back in June 2020, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern declared that NZ has already eliminated the transmission of the coronavirus domestically and will lift all containment measures except for border controls, making the nation one of the first countries to do so.
